After the intervention of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, the way for admissions of 64 students from Gilgit-Baltistan has been cleared. Previously due to a tug of war between Provincial Government of Punjab, where Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has government and center (Islamabad) where Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is in government, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) was not allowing the medical colleges in Punjab to give admissions to students from Gilgit-Baltistan.

It is to be noted that during the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) elections, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr. Shebaz Sharif had announced to double the number of seats in the medical and dental colleges of Punjab for the students of Gilgit-Baltistan. Keeping his promise, the Punjab government has issued orders for the increasing the seats, however, PMDC which works under Federal Government in Islamabad rejected the request of Punjab government, seemingly on political basis. Resultantly 64 talented students from Gilgit-Baltistan have suffered emotionally, physically and academically. Classes in all medical colleges of Punjab have started almost a month back during all this period all students who were nominated by the Directorate of Education Gilgit-Baltistan, against the announced seats of the Government of Punjab, were shuttling from one office to the other office and the nominated colleges and they were left helpless with the fear that their academic years will be lost due to the PMDC’s inhuman approach.

However, on media reports the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah, has taken immediate steps and with the involvement of Prime Minister of Pakistan, PMDC approved the admissions immediately. It would be a relief for all young minds, the talented students and their parents when these 64 students will start to attend their classes in their concerned colleges.

It is to be noted that there is not a single medical and dental colleges in Gilgit-Baltistan and student from Gilgit-Baltistan are given admissions in the Medical and Dental Colleges of Sindh, Pubjab, NWFP and Baluchistan on quota basis. The numbers of admissions are very few and do not meet the need of the required doctors and dentist in Gilgit-Baltistan, creating a serious situation for health care.

Gilgit-Baltistan is making an investment policy for local and foreign investors for providing incentives to ensure meaningful investment in the resource-rich region.

Adviser on Investment to Governor Gilgit-Baltistan, Mian Shafqat Ali, said this while speaking at a meeting of stakeholders here on Thursday.

He said an industrial estate would be one of the features of the upcoming investment policy.

Shafqat Ali said the policy would provide lucrative and equal incentives for both foreign and local investors.

He said government departments were working to ensure one-window facility to potential investors in areas of power generation, tourism, mines and minerals and agriculture.

He said special care would be taken for those who would be pouring their money in food processing and preservation.

Shafqat said there was no dearth of resources in Gilgit-Baltistan but unfortunately never in the past attention was given to the area.

Had some attention been paid, the situation would have been quite different and the country would not have faced power shortages that have crippled the trade and industry, he added.
